Primary treatment is the removal of material that will either float or readily settle out by gravity. It includes the physical processes of screening, grit removal and sedimentation. Historically, this has been achieved by large sedimentation basins which achieve typically 40-60% TSS and 25-40% BOD5 removal. Advanced primary treatment is the use of technologies to achieve higher removal percentage that typically achieved with conventional primary sedimentation.
