Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. is pleased to congratulate Rivera Utilities WWTP for their recent “Wastewater Project of the Year – Distinction Award” as part of the 2021 Global Water Intelligence (GWI) Global Water Awards. The award in this category recognizes great innovation in projects which optimize physical or environmental footprint.
Riviera Utilities was short-listed for this prestigious award for its $20M advanced secondary treatment upgrade utilizing the AquaNereda® aerobic granular sludge technology at its Wolf Creek plant in Foley, Alabama USA which services 6,000 customers. Among the short-listed projects for the Wastewater Treatment Project of the Year award included a $50M stormwater management project in Sydney Harbour, Australia servicing 30,000 customers and Al Methneb zero-waste project in Saudi Arabia which reuses brine water to irrigate over 85,000 newly planted trees.
Although the top award for Wastewater Project of the Year went to Sydney Harbour, the achievement of Riviera Utilities competing for this global award and receiving the Distinction award is quite an accomplishment. Even more impressive is Riviera Utilities’ progressive thinking and the decision to employ state-of-the art AquaNereda aerobic granular sludge technology as the best treatment solution for its 6,000 customers instead of taking the traditional approach of expanding its extended aeration process. By employing AquaNereda technology in 2020, the facility was able to increase its capacity, has consistently reduced energy costs between 40% – 50% and future-proofed the plant in anticipation of more stringent effluent limits for nitrogen and phosphorus.
Congratulations to Riviera Utilities and the plant’s staff, including Lee Kibler, as the 2021 recipient of the “Wastewater Project of the Year—Distinction Award”.
